Recovering the console and admin password on a Huawei Switch without loosing your current configuration

Summary:

In this note, we quickly recover the console password on a Huawei S5320-28P-SI Switch

Problem or Goal: 

In case you loose your console access to the Huawei switch and would like to recover it without loosing all your current configuration/

Note: This procedure requires a switch restart and will therefore affect traffic in a live production environment, best ask for a maintenance window to run this procedure. 

Cause: 

Console or admin password lost on a Huawei switch

Solution:

1. Connect to the switch via console to your laptop or PC
2. Restart the switch and interrupt the boot process to enter BootLoad menu
do this at the point when serial out put reads:


At the password prompt, type: Admin@huawei.com

3. Select option 7 "Clear password for console user" in the menu below:


4. Select option 1 "Boot with default mode", this will allow you to access the switch without prompting for console password. 

5. The switch will go through the boot cycle and will not prompt you for a console password.


6. Enter the system-view mode and change the "admin" password



7. Change the line console authentication-mode from "none" to "password"


8. Exit by typing "q" and try to access the terminal again, it will request to change the console password


9. Save the configuration and reboot your switch to test that all is ok, that you can now access your console terminal with your new password. 


Problem Solved?

Yes, we were able to recovery the admin and console password to access the switch.
